Thunder Tiger Victoria
The Victoria is a simple plastic kit sailboat manufactured by Thunder Tiger, and distributed world wide. The base kit costs $110 and includes stock components less electronics. With servos and a radio you can be on the water sailing for less then $200. Several skippers are interested in racing and upgrade the stock components including racing sails, carbon mast and booms, etc. A nicely outfitted racing Victoria can be on the line for less than $400 all up.
The Victoria is considered a one design class within the American Model Yacht Club due to the hull, keel and rudder. Tinkerers will enjoy the fact that while the hull is stock, several other simple changes can be made to improve performance. Base construction is typically done in a couple of weekends.
The Victoria has some key advantages over other classes. It is reasonably, priced and relatively easy to rig and sail in most conditions. The class is strong nationally and continues to grow. There are regional championships as well as a well attended National Championship race that rotates amongst several locations. The Victoria is a great beginner boat and yet you can find plenty of competition locally as well as nationally. The Victoria is also a perfect weeknight racer. You can put a fully rigged Victoria in the trunk or back seat of almost any car, arrive at the pond, put batteries in and be sailing in less then two minutes.
Several of our club members have built Victoria kits and have placed at Nationals over the years. If you are interested in learning more, or before building, please contact the Fleet Captain.
